FOR LIGHTNING STRIKE SAFETY,
YOU CAN'T USE THE COUNTING METHOD
TO GAUGE THE DISTANCE OF A STORM.

You could be watching your child play baseball eight miles away from an approaching storm, and while never seeing dark skies, or hearing thunder, you could experience a lightning strike out of a clear blue sky. What a Bolt Out Of The Blue means is that lightning can strike from perfectly blue sky. Here’s why.

Lightning strokes are 6 to 10 miles in length. Thunder is audible to 2-4 miles, depending on whether you are inside or outside, surrounding terrain, and the overall surrounding noise level. As you can see from the diagram, the danger zone for a lightning strike extends far beyond the distance from where thunder can be heard. Even though you can’t see or hear a storm, there may be one out there. If there is any thunderstorm activity within 75 miles of you, ThunderBolt will warn you with ample time to reach safe haven.

LIGHTNING STRIKE SAFETY FACTS

  • LIGHTING CAN STRIKE 6 TO 10 MILES FROM LEADING EDGE OF STORM. 30% OF VICTIMS ARE STRUCK UNDER BLUE SKIES BEFORE STORM ARRIVES.

  • 60% OF VICTIMS ARE STRUCK UNDER BLUE SKIES AFTER STORMS HAVE PASSED.

  • Each year, an average of 150 peple are reported killed and more than 700 reported injured by lightning. Due to inaccuracies in the medical reporting process of lightning-related incidents, it is estimated that the ACTUAL number of of lightning-related deaths and injuries may be 5,000 per year.

COMMON SENSE MISTAKES WITH LIGHTNING
CAN BE DEADLY

  • Waiting to see or hear the first stroke of lightning means that you've been at risk of a direct lightning strike for 30 minutes or more already.

  • Waiting for 15-30 minutes after you think a storm has passed doesn't guarantee lightning strike safety. Storms can stall nearby, or new storms can move close enough to be a danger.

  • The "counting method" of calculating the distance to a storm is almost always useless in determining exactly where and how many storm cells may be a direct lightning threat to you at a given moment.
